Bearing types

Most machines run on one of these. The series is how the number printed on the bearing starts; xx stands for the bore size.

Deep groove ball bearings

The everyday bearing in motors, pumps, fans and gearboxes. Open, with metal shields (ZZ) or with rubber seals (2RS).

60xx62xx63xx

Angular contact ball bearings

For shafts pushed along their length as well as sideways: pumps, compressors and machine spindles. Often fitted in pairs.

72xx73xx32xx

Tapered roller bearings

Heavy loads from two directions at once, usually in pairs: gearboxes, axles, tractors and trailers.

302xx303xx322xx

Cylindrical roller bearings

Very heavy loads at speed: large motors, gearboxes, rolling mills and crushers.

NUNJNUP

Spherical roller bearings

Heavy loads on shafts that bend or sit slightly out of line: crushers, vibrating screens, conveyors and kiln rollers.

222xx223xx230xx

Needle roller bearings

Thin rollers for tight spaces: gearboxes, two-wheelers and compact pumps.

NANKHK

Thrust bearings

For loads along the shaft, as in vertical pumps, turntables and screw jacks.

511xx512xx811xx

Plummer blocks and pillow blocks

A bearing in a ready-to-bolt housing, for conveyors, fans, farm machinery and line shafts.

UCPUCFSN

Miniature and special bearings

Small precision bearings for instruments, split bearings that fit without taking the shaft out, and made-to-order specials.

Reading a bearing number

It’s printed on the side of the outer ring. This one says 6205-2RS C3. Here’s what each part means.

  1. 6

    Type

Deep groove ball bearing. 7 means angular contact, 3 tapered roller, 22 or 23 spherical roller, 51 thrust ball. Letters such as NU or NJ mean cylindrical roller.

  2. 2

    Series

How heavy it is for its bore: 0 extra light, 2 light, 3 medium. A 6305 has the same bore as a 6205 but is bigger and stronger.

  3. 05

    Bore: 25 mm

From 04 upward, multiply by 5. Below that, 00 is 10 mm, 01 is 12 mm, 02 is 15 mm and 03 is 17 mm.

  4. 2RS

    Seals

Rubber seals on both sides, packed with grease. RS is one side only, ZZ means metal shields, and no letters means open.

  5. C3

    Clearance

More internal play than normal, for bearings that run hot, such as in electric motors. No code means normal.

Number worn off?

Send a photo of the bearing. If you can, measure the inside diameter, outside diameter and width in millimetres.

Different brand, same bearing

The core number is the same across brands. Only the seal codes change: 2RS, 2RS1, 2RSR, DDU and LLU all mean rubber seals on both sides.

Lubricants

Greases and industrial oils from IPOL, our core lubricant line, and MOSIL for high heat and specialty jobs.

  • Industrial greases

Bearings, conveyors and chassis points, including extreme-pressure (EP) and high-temperature types.

  • Hydraulic oils

Presses, injection moulding machines and hydraulic power packs. Usually ISO VG 32, 46 or 68.

  • Gear oils

Industrial gearboxes and reducers. Usually EP grades such as ISO VG 220 or 320.

  • Cutting oils and coolants

Neat cutting oils and water-mixed coolants for turning, milling and grinding.

  • Compressor oils

    Screw and piston air compressors.

  • Transformer oils

Insulating oil for transformers and switchgear.

  • Engine oils

Diesel engines, tractors, generator sets and vehicles.

  • Process oils

Used as an ingredient in rubber, textile and other manufacturing.

  • Specialty lubricants

Anti-seize compounds and synthetic greases for extreme heat, from MOSIL.
